DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z January 22, 2014

West-Central Plains:
Multiple plumes of blowing soil and/or dust is visible in satellite
imagery located on the panhandle of Nebraska moving SE through Colorado
and streaming into Kansas. These plumes begin around 2115Z and continue
to blow SE until sunset.

South Carolina:
A light plume of haze is visible in satellite imagery of unknown
composition is visible off the coast of South Carolina around 1715Z in
the Atlantic Ocean. It is possible that the plume is a mix of unknown
aerosols as well as smoke from the numerous agricultural burns that have
been taking place in the deep south recently.

OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
