DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z March 13, 2014

Central California Coast:
An unknown aerosol is blowing off the coast of central California.
The aerosol is moving west from San Luis Obispo and Monterey counties
into the Pacific.

Dust/Sand – South Plains (TX/LA)
The dust/sand seen earlier today cannot be seen in evening GOES-13
imagery.

Earlier Today:
Dust/Sand:
South Plains (TX/LA):
Last nights' surface dust/sand from CO/KS has become a bit more elevated
though still likely near the boundary layer or below behind the cold
front that crosses central MS into the Gulf of Mexico and back across
Tamaulipas/Neuvo Leon into the Sierra Madre. As such, thin dust/sand
can be seen from a secondary boundary (confluence line) that extends
from the the Mississippi River near the AR/LA boarder across N LA into
North TX just south of I-20 near Midland/Odessa then to near Roswell,
NM southward to the aforementioned cold front. The sand is a bit more
dense along that northern “boundary” as well as across the Western
TX panhandle through the Big Bend region into N Coahulia and along the
Rio Grande. The entire region appears to be moving S or SSE except for
some areas on the western edge which appear to be near stationary with
limited flow to pour over the higher terrain.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
