THROUGH 0000Z March 14, 2014

Plains/Mississippi Valley/Southeast US
Numerous fires are burning across this region with most producing light to
some moderate smoke. Some are producing moderately dense to dense smoke.
Most smoke from these fires are moving in an E-ly direction This is a
large change from yesterday where most of the fires were burning across
the southern/central Plains and Louisiana. The largest of all these
fires are listed below by state.

Alabama:
A fire burning in E Winston county is producing moderately dense to
dense smoke SE into Walker, Jefferson, Blout and Cullman counties.

Mississippi:
A large fire burning in Lafayette county is emitting moderately dense
to dense smoke into the counties of Pontotoc, Lee and Union.
In the southern part of the state, a fire in Perry county is producing
moderately dense to dense smoke S into George, Stone and Jackson counties.
Smoke is beginning to reach the Gulf of Mexico.

Arkansas:
Fires in Scott and Franklin counties are producing large amounts of
moderately dense to dense smoke spreading E into multiple counties.
The largest of the two, the Scott county fire, smoke is reaching the
counties of Yell, Logan, Perry, Garline, Saline, Pope and Conway.

Oklahoma/Western Arkansas
A large fire in E McCurtain county is spreading smoke into eastern

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
