DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z March 16, 2014

Dust/Sand:
Colorado:
Strong northerly winds are kicking up dust/sand and loose soils across
much of SE Colorado south of US40 in Lincoln and Cheyenne counties where
individual narrow N-S bands/plumes consolidated and became moderately
to dense sand strom across E Animas and Baca counties before moving into
NM, Texas county OK and far NW portions of the TX panhandle as far south
as I-40 in Quay county. Though cloudy during the start of the visible
airborne sand around 1915Z... but becomes clearly seen by 2145z.

Arizona:
Very light sand could be seen starting around 2032z moving SE from the
Moenkopi Plateau (near Tuba City, AZ) in E Coconino county and has moved
as far SSE as SE Cochise county moving into far SW NM. Increased winds
around 2202z once again kicked up thin dust/sand from the same region as
well as sources in far N Navajo and Apache counties (Shonto Plateau and
Chinle Valley). This is much larger moving more due S and has higher
density as it covers all of Navajo/Apache and E Coconino counties.

Utah:
A very thin band (2-4km wide) of thin density salt/dust/sand originating
from the Sevier Dry Lake bed in south central Millard county is blowing
SSW between the Wahwah and San Francisco Mt ranges in Beaver county.

Nevada:
Thin dust/sand from Roach Dry Lake bed and surrounding deserts along I-15
in Clark county is blowing south into California near Cima and Kelso, CA.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
