DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z March 25, 2014

Southern Plains/Lower Mississippi River Valley:
Clearly elevated aerosol layer seen at the limb of the GOES-West field of
view across E KS/MO/E OK/SE TX/AR and LA this morning moving SE through
the flow but the channels of flow dropping south with the advancement
of the jet streak. Generally, this layer is over 500mb... and can be
traced way back to Asian origins, though exactly what the aerosol
is is debatable.   Significant fires north of Mongolia in southern
Russian Siberia are sources of smoke, dust from the Gobi desert and
desertification areas of north central China and pollutant aerosols from
industrial China are contributors.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
