DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z April 27, 2014

DUST:
Southern Plains:
Several plumes of blowing dust/sand are visible moving eastward in New
Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. At 1300Z the first plumes are visible in
Dumas, Texas as well as Texahoma, Oklahoma. The plumes near Fort Sumner,
New Mexico are visible around 1430Z and continue blowing across the
Texas border.

SMOKE:
Western Gulf of Mexico:
A large area of light density smoke is visible in Mexico from the base
of the Yucatan Peninsula north just past the U.S. border offshore of
Texas. This smoke originates from the ongoing agricultural burns in
Mexico and Central America.

Eastern Gulf of Mexico:
A plume of light-density smoke is visible emitting off the coast of Cuba
driving NW towards western Florida Keys. This smoke originates from the
ongoing agricultural burns in Cuba.

Southern Plains:
A band of remnant smoke is visible moving eastward through central Texas
and Oklahoma this morning. It is possible that this
band is a mixture of blowing dust/sand, which has been prevalent in the
area from the events occurring this morning and last night.

AEROSOLS:
Mid-Atlantic:
A band of unknown aerosols are visible moving east around 1200Z off the
coast of Virginia and North Carolina into the Atlantic Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
