DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z May 06, 2014

SMOKE:
Southern Plains:
An area of light density smoke is visible in central Oklahoma and
Kansas. Numerous fires are burning near the border in Oklahoma which is
creating a good amount of smoke that is traveling north.

Another area of remnant smoke is visible to the SW of the first one. The
smoke is visible from central Texas up through Oklahoma into Arkansas. The
smoke is remnant from the agricultural burns going on in that area from
the past 24 hours.

Southeast:
A few plumes of detached smoke are visible from several agricultural
burns on the coast of South Carolina and Georgia. The plumes are moving
east offshore into the Atlantic Ocean around 2200Z.

BLOWING DUST:
California:
A large heavy swath of blowing dust is visible in satellite imagery this
afternoon. The dust is first visible over the Bay area around 1400Z and
continues its way south towards Los Angeles until sunset. The dust is
visible inland as far as the Nevada border. The dust is Asian in origin
and has been blowing over the Pacific the last few days.

Washington:
Waves of dust are also visible making its way south from Alaska into
the Pacific NW near Washington this evening, notably after 1700Z.

AEROSOLS:
North Carolina:
An area of unknown aerosols are visible drifting offshore the Atlantic
Ocean. The plume is visible off the coast of North Carolina moving
eastward.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
