THROUGH 0145Z May 17, 2014
SMOKE: Southern California/Pacific Ocean: The plume of smoke noted earlier today off the coast of southern California was more diffuse this evening and was difficult to discern due to high level clouds over the area but still covered a broad area mainly south of the Channel Islands. The smoke from the fires in the Camp Pendleton area was moderate to dense and was moving to the east across the Salton Sea and nearly reaching the Arizona border by sunset. Arizona/New Mexico: Moderate to dense smoke from the Skunk fire in southeast Arizona was moving to the east and southeast reaching into south central New Mexico by sunset. Manitoba/Saskatchewan: A large number of agricultural fires over the Dakotas, northern Minnesota, southern Manitoba and southern Saskatchewan were noted this afternoon and evening. They were generally producing short lived puffs of smoke but the large number of plumes was creating a more widespread coverage of light smoke in the region. BLOWING DUST: Nevada: Several sources of blowing dust were noted originating from the dry lakes and loose, sandy soils of central Nevada and spreading to the east to near the Utah border.
