DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z May 22, 2014

Continuing from this morning:

SMOKE:
Alaska:
A smoke plume emitted from the wildfires raging on the Kenai peninsula
near Soldotna in southern Alaska has extended south into the northern
Gulf of Alaska, just east of Kodiak Island. The smoke has been wrapped
into the low pressure system near the coastline.

Arizona/Utah:
A large plume of light to moderate smoke was seen extending from
a wildfire located in northern Arizona near Flagstaff and Oak Creek
Canyon. The light density smoke is seen ranging into northeast Utah. The
moderate density smoke has remained confined to slightly north of the
wildfire.

This afternoon/evening:

SMOKE:
Gulf of Mexico:
An area of light-density remnant smoke is visible in the central Gulf
of Mexico, moving south from Louisiana and swirling westward. The
smoke originates from the agricultural burns taking place in the Lower
Mississippi River region.

North Dakota:
A plume of light density remnant smoke is visible in much of the state
of North Dakota moving SE. The smoke is remnant from the fires burning
in Saskatchewan and Manitoba moving south into the US.

AEROSOLS:
Southeast:
A large plume of unknown aerosols are visible off the coast of Georgia,
South Carolina, and North Carolina into the Atlantic Ocean. The haze is
first visible at approximately 1500Z and continues until sunset.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
