DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z May 25, 2014

Alaska:
The Funny River fire continues to burn in southern Alaska near Soldotna
on the Kenai peninsula, emitting a large amount of smoke. Light smoke is
seen extending across the Gulf of Alaska, with a moderately dense area
of smoke extending south of the fire. The smoke extends as far south
as 49N as it is getting wrapped into the low pressure system dropping
southward along the British Columbia coast. Residual smoke from the
wildfire stretches across southern Yukon, Northwest Territories, northern
British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and into northern Manitoba. Smoke
cannot be seen coming from the source directly due to cloud cover.

Gulf of Mexico:
A large area of remnant light-to-moderately dense smoke encompasses the
eastern Gulf of Mexico. The smoke is moving in a clockwise direction from
the Florida coastline, toward Louisiana, and then into the southeastern
US. An extension of this smoke could been seen moving across Missouri
but clouds inhibited full detection of the smoke.

Additionally, an area of light density remnant smoke was visible in the
Bay of Campeche drifting westward. The origin of this smoke is likely
due to the agricultural burns across Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
