DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z May 27, 2014

Dust/Sand:
S Arizona/NW Sonora:
Light dust/sand can be seen moving SW out of south central Pima county
starting around 23Z from the dry river bed region SW of Sells, AZ.
The plume is wide WNW to ESE but only extends about 10-15 miles to the
SW into N Sonora.
Additionally, light sand can be seen converging across NW Sonora and N
Sea of Cortez starting around the same time 23Z.

Smoke:
Alaska/N Canada/E Gulf of Alaska:
Please see graphic/GIS pages below for very large area of smoke from
the Funny River Complex on the Kenai peninsula. Smoke from prior days
reaches as far E as the Hudson Bay across the Canadian Territories a
well as nearly 50N over the eastern Gulf of Alaska, as well as covering
much of South Central AK.

OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
