DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z May 29, 2014
Smoke: Alaska/Western Canada: An area of remnant smoke originating from the Funny River wildfire in Alaska was seen still tracking eastward across portions of western Canada. Unfortunately the full extent of the smoke plume was difficult to identify given the abundance of clouds. Northern and Central Plains/Upper Midwest: An elongated plume of haze/unknown aerosols is captured in this evening's GOES-East visible satellite imagery stretching south-north from central Texas to the Dakotas/Minnesota. Some smoke maybe be mixed in with the haze across eastern North Dakota/southern Minnesota as several fires across these states are producing light smoke plumes. Dust: Nevada: Blowing dust/sand is seen moving to the southeast across western/central Nevada this evening. Dust/Sand appears to be originating from near I-80 and just west of the Fallon National Wildlife Refuge. California/Nevada/Idaho: An expansive plume of suspended aerosols is observed offshore of California and stretching to the north and east across majority of central and northern California, western Nevada and southern Idaho. This aerosol is believed to be dust from Asia that has been transported across the Pacific Ocean. THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
