DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z June 10, 2014

Western U.S:
A large area of thin to heavy density smoke is present over central and
southeastern Oregon, southern Idaho, northern Utah, northern Nevada,
and northern California. Thin smoke extends through most of this area,
moderate density smoke extends to the east of this fire through eastern
Oregon, and heavy density smoke is seen very close to the wildfire
and moving south. This smoke originates from the Two Bulls fire in
central Oregon.

Mexico/Arizona:
Thin to heavy density smoke is seen in northern Sonora, Mexico, near the
Mexico/Arizona border. Light smoke has made its way into southern Arizona,
while moderate and heavy density smoke remains in Mexico over the fire.

Florida:
A widespread area of thin to moderate density smoke is extending from
a group of fires south of Lake Okeechobee. Thin smoke ranges to the
northeast of the fire over the Atlantic Ocean, and moderate density
smoke remains near the fire, as well as a patch to the northeast over
the Atlantic.

Texas:
Blowing dust is visible in northern Texas moving southward. It is
originating from an area just north of Amarillo.

Northwest Territories:
A thin to heavy density smoke plume is extending from a fire originating
to the southwest of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. Thin
to moderately dense smoke is ranging to the southwest into northwestern
Alberta and northeastern British Columbia, while heavy smoke remains
close to the fire and extending into northwestern Alberta.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
