DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z June 10, 2014

BLOWING DUST:
Southern California:
Two areas of blowing dust is seen in southern California. One area of
dust is originating in northern Baja California, extending northward
over the Salton Sea. Another area of dust is seen originating just to
the north of Bakersfield and ranging eastward.

SMOKE:
Baja California/Arizona:
A light to moderately dense smoke plume is seen moving northeastward
through northern Baja California, northwestern Sonora and along the
border of Mexico and southwestern Arizona. Thin smoke is extending near
the Mexico/U.S. Border, and moderate density smoke remains back over
Baja California.

Idaho/Wyoming:
Light density smoke is extending eastward through central Idaho and
into western Wyoming. Moderate density smoke is also visible ranging
just eastward of the fire.

Northwestern Territories:
An expansive area of smoke is seen extending from a fire southwest of
Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. Light density smoke
is moving through the Northwest Territories into northern Alberta,
moderate density smoke is extending to the southeast of the fire near
the Northwest Territories/Alberta border, and heavy density smoke remains
close to the original wildfire over the southern Northwest Territories.

AEROSOLS:
Central-North-Central U.S:
A large area of unknown aerosols remains over much of central and
north-central U.S. The extent of this area is generally from southern
Minnesota and eastern South Dakota to the south into northeastern Texas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
