DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z June 11, 2014

SMOKE:
South Texas:
An area of aerosols, believed to be smoke mixed with haze/pollutants
extends from deep south Texas towards central Texas. A fire located
south of the border in eastern Mexico is likely the origin of this
remnant area of smoke.

Northwest Territories/Yukon:
Two areas of light-density smoke were observed this morning across
central Yukon and western Northwest Territories. Smoke is associated
with two wildfires located southwest of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest
Territories.

Southwest Northwest Territories/Alberta/Saskatchewan:
An expansive areas of remnant smoke remains stretched across southwestern
Northwest Territories, northeast British Columbia, Alberta and
west-central Saskatchewan. Embedded moderately dense smoke is seen
extending across portions of Alberta province. This area of smoke is
believed to also be associated with the wildfires mentioned earlier
southwest of Great Slave Lake.

AEROSOLS:
Central/North-Central U.S:
A large area of aerosols is once again observed across much the central
U.S. The composition of the area of aerosols may include elevated
dust along with some remnant smoke that has drifted east from wildfires
burning in western Wyoming and eastern Idaho.

Eastern Northwest Territories:
A narrow ribbon of unknown aerosols extends from north to south across
the eastern province of Northwest Territories in Canada.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
