DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z June 13, 2014

SMOKE:
Alberta/Saskatchewan/Manitoba/Dakotas/Minnesota:
An expansive area of light-density smoke is visible stretching from
edge of Great Slave Lake, across Alberta/Saskatchewan/Manitoba moving
southeastward into the Dakotas and western Minnesota. This remnant smoke
originates from wildfires burning just south of the Great Slave Lake.

California:
A small patch of light smoke could be seen north of Sacramento within the
Valley. This is likely due to the small fires burning in the same area.

Arizona/Southern Nevada/Southern Utah:
A small patch of light density remnant smoke was visible moving from
extreme southeast California northeastward across northwest Arizona
into southern Utah. This smoke likely originates from a few fires in
the vicinity as well as from a cluster of fires just south of the US
California border.

BLOWING DUST:
Oregon/California/Nevada:
A significant amount of blowing dust is visible extending from portions
of Oregon and Nevada towards the east-northeast. Around 1615Z, dust
started blowing from Goose and Summer Lakes in Oregon and a few smaller
points in between and was quickly moving through central Idaho per
0115Z GOES visible image. At 2100Z, dust started blowing from Fallon
National Wildlife Refuge and the Black Rock Desert area in Nevada and was
extending east-northeast through northern Nevada towards Utah and southern
Idaho. The dust is moving fairly quickly due to 20-30 kt southwesterly
surface winds in the region.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
