DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1740Z June 13, 2014

SMOKE:
Midwest:
An expansive area of light-density smoke is visible stretching from
edge of Minnesota moving SE through Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, and
Indiana. This remnant smoke originates from wildfires burning near the
Great Slave Lake.

Nevada/Utah:
A small area of light-density smoke is visible moving NE towards western
Utah this morning from eastern Nevada. Clouds obscure the view of the
moving smoke, so the range of the plume is difficult to determine. This
remnant smoke originates from the small fires that have been burning to
the south that were referenced in the Text last night.

NW Territories:
A large plume of light-density smoke is visible swirling around the Great
Slave Lake wildfires located in the NW Territories. The smoke extends
throughout the province and is moving SE into Alberta. This remnant
smoke originates from the wildfires burning around the Great Slave Lake.

AEROSOLS:
Texas:
A large plume of unknown aerosols are visible looming over northern Texas
this morning. The plumes are first visible at 1200Z and continue until
approximately 1500Z. Due to the high levels of blowing dust to the west
and the remnant smoke coming from the north (Canada) and south (Mexico),
the levels of aerosols in this area are elevated.

Eastern Gulf of Mexico:
A large plume of unknown aerosols are visible moving NW off of Cuba
towards U.S. waters in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, just west of the FL
Keys. Plumes are first visible at sunrise and continue past 1500Z.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
