DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z June 19, 2014

SMOKE:
Virginia/North Carolina:
An area of smoke is seen drifting slowly eastward over southeastern
VA and eastern NC, moving out over the Atlantic Ocean. This smoke is
most likely attributed to the multitude of agricultural burns that have
occurred through NC and SC.

Canada:
Numerous wildfires that have been burning in northern Alberta and
Northwest Territories surrounding the Great Slave Lake have ejected
a large amount of smoke. The smoke is moderately to heavily dense
throughout most of central Northwest Territories close to the wildfires,
extending northward into western Nunavut just south of the Coronation
Gulf. Light smoke is expanding further into central Nunavut, over the
Coronation Gulf and as far west as over the Great Bear Lake. The smoke
plumes associated with these wildfires are moving northeastward into
Nunavut. Remnant smoke associated with these wildfires can be seen as
far south as southern Ontario and over Lake Superior, and southern Quebec.

AEROSOLS:
Mid-Atlantic States:
An area of unknown aerosols is moving eastward over MD, DE, PA, NJ,
southern NY and over the Atlantic Ocean. The origin of these aerosols
are unknown.

Louisiana/Arkansas:
A small area of unknown aerosols is seen moving northward over northern
Louisiana and Arkansas into southern Missouri. These aerosols are unknown
in nature but may contain smoke associated with the agricultural fires
in eastern Arkansas and northwestern Mississippi.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
