DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z June 20, 2014

SMOKE:
Mid-Atlantic/Atlantic Ocean:
An area containing a mixture of smoke and sulfates is seen across
northeastern SC, eastern NC, and extending over the Atlantic Ocean. The
smoke is originating from the numerous agricultural burns occurring
across eastern NC and SC.

Mississippi Valley:
An area containing a multitude of small smoke plumes is located over
southeastern MO, western TN, and eastern AR. These smoke plumes are being
emitted from agricultural burns occurring throughout the Mississippi
Valley.

Canada:
Wildfires burning across much of Northwest Territories surrounding the
Great Slave Lake as well as northern Alberta continue to emit large
amounts of light-moderately dense smoke. The smoke is lifting northward
through Northwest Territories and into western Nunavut. A large area of
remnant smoke from these wildfires is currently extending over central
and eastern Nunavut, over most of Hudson Bay and into northern Quebec.

BLOWING DUST:
Northern Mexico:
A small area of blowing dust is moving eastward across northern Sonora
state in Mexico.

Gulf of Mexico:
An expansive amount of Saharan dust has protruded into the southern half
of the Gulf of Mexico. It is lifting northward towards the northwestern
part of the Gulf into southeastern Texas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
