DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0220Z June 24, 2014

SMOKE:
Manitoba:
A plume of light density smoke is visible moving south towards the
U.S. border is visible this evening. This expanse of remnant smoke
was analyzed this morning, and is currently moving through eastern
Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and western Quebec.

DUST:
Gulf of Mexico:
A large area of blowing dust is visible in the eastern Gulf of Mexico

SMOKE:
Canada:
A large area of light to moderate density smoke is seen extending
northern Alberta, through Northwest Territories and the Great Slave Lake
into northwestern Nunavut. This smoke is associated with the wildfires
occurring throughout Northwest Territories. Two expansive areas of
light density remnant smoke is seen; one area descending southward
over eastern Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and most of Hudson Bay,
and the other further south over northern and Central Alberta as well as
central Saskatchewan and northwestern Manitoba. These areas of remnant
smoke are from the same wildfires previously mentioned.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
