DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z June 24, 2014

SMOKE:
Central/Western Canada:
An expansive smoke plume is located over northern Alberta, most of
Northwest Territories including both the Great Slave Lake and the Great
Bear Lake, central and western Nunavut, and eastern Yukon. This smoke
is associated with wildfires burning through Northwest Territories and
northern Alberta. The smoke is widely light in density, with moderate
density smoke located in close proximity to the wildfires, and an area
of heavy density smoke swirling to the east of Great Bear Lake. Remnant
smoke has shifted southward extending into southern Saskatchewan as well
as southern and central Alberta.

Canadian Maritimes:
An area of light remnant smoke has been seen over the Atlantic Ocean,
just offshore of Newfoundland, Labrador, and northern Quebec. This smoke
originated from the wildfires in northwestern Canada.

Midwestern U.S:
A small area of light remnant smoke is currently seen over Minnesota,
Wisconsin, Iowa and northwestern Illinois. This smoke most likely
originated from the wildfires in northwestern Canada.

BLOWING DUST:
Northern Gulf of Mexico:
A small area of blowing dust is seen moving northward offshore of
southeastern Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and western Florida,
approximately West of Tampa, FL. This dust is most likely Saharan
in origin.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
