DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z June 26, 2014

AEROSOLS:
Atlantic Ocean:
A plume of unknown aerosols are visible moving offshore into the Atlantic
Ocean between Florida and Bahamas. It is possible that these aerosols
are from the burning that has been taking place in the southeast, but
most likely a mixture from the considerable amount of Saharan dust that
has been blowing through the area.

DUST:
Gulf of Mexico:
A plume of blowing dust is visible in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, from
mid-coast Florida offshore out to the panhandle. The blowing dust is
most likely Saharan in origin and has been blowing around the Caribbean
the last few days.

SMOKE:
Canada:
A large amount of wildfires continue to burn in Northwest Territories
and northern Saskatchewan, producing a expansive plume of light-moderate
density smoke extending through Northwest Territories, eastern Yukon,
Nunavut, Hudson Bay, central and northern Manitoba, northern Ontario
and northwestern Quebec. A small area of heavy density smoke can also be
seen swirling north of Reindeer Lake. The newly emitted smoke is moving
northward, while remnant smoke is being drawn southeastward. Remnant
smoke can also be seen in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
