DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z July 2, 2014

SMOKE:
Canada/U.S:
Smoke from wildfires continuing across much of Northwest Territories
and northern Alberta has become entrained into the upper level flow,
bringing it southward across central portions of the U.S. Smoke extends
from northern Yukon and Northwest Territories southward across western
Nunavut, northwestern Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Smoke enters
into the U.S. through Montana and North Dakota and can be seen as far
south as Oklahoma and Arkansas. The smoke then hooks northeastward through
the Ohio Valley and the Great Lakes region. Moderate density smoke in the
U.S. is embedded in this flow through the central and northern Plains,
and moderate to heavy density smoke remains over western Canada.

California:
An area of light density smoke is seen over northern California and
extending northward through central Oregon. This smoke originates from
a wildfire occurring northeast of Calistoga.

DUST:
Eastern U.S:
A band of Saharan Dust is visible moving eastward across Alabama, Georgia,
South Carolina, North Carolina and southern Virginia.

Lower Mississippi/Gulf of Mexico
An area of moderate density Saharan dust remains over eastern Texas,
southern Arkansas, Louisiana, and western Mississippi. The Saharan
dust can also been seen over northern and central portions of the Gulf
of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
