DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z July 6, 2014

SMOKE:
New England/Eastern Canada:
An elongated plume of remnant smoke believed to have originated from
numerous wildfires located across the Northwest Territories province in
Canada is seen this evening positioned from coastal New England northward
to northern Newfoundland.

Northern/Northwest Canada:
Relative expansive area of light to moderately dense smoke stretches from
western Hudson Bay westward to the Yukon Territory. Numerous wildfires
continue to produce smoke this evening and over the course of the past
few days have generated all the smoke analyzed across northern and
northwest Canada. The majority of these fires are around the Great
Slave Lake and northern Saskatchewan.

California:
Light to heavy dense smoke being produced by the Butts wildfire in Napa
county extends across a good portion of northern California this evening.

Utah:
An area of remnant smoke has remained nearly stationary across
northern/central Utah this afternoon/evening. Area of smoke is likely
the result of the Lages wildfire located across northeastern Nevada and
one that broke out this afternoon across northeastern Utah.

HAZE/DUST:
Southern/Central US:
An area of aerosols is seen across much of the gulf coast states and
north over portions of the Central Plains this evening and believed to
be comprised of haze/pollution and Saharan dust. Portions of extreme
southeast Texas/southwestern Louisiana are also dealing with light to
moderately dense smoke from a fire located across southwestern Louisiana.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
