DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z July 6, 2014

SMOKE:
New England/Eastern Canada:
An elongated plume of remnant smoke believed to have originated from
numerous wildfires located across the Northwest Territories province
in Canada is seen positioned from coastal New England to the north,
north of Newfoundland.

Western/Northwestern Canada:
A large extended area of light density smoke is seen over the Northwest
Territories eastward to the northwestern edge of Quebec. A smaller area of
moderate density smoke is focused over the Northwest Territories. These
areas of smoke originate from the wildfires surrounding Great Slave Lake
and northern Saskatchewan. A separate area of light to moderate density
originating from the wildfires around Great Slave Lake has pinched off
from the larger area of smoke and can be seen over Saskatchewan and
western Manitoba.

Utah:
A faint area of light density smoke remains over northern Utah, most
likely originating from the Lages fire occurring in eastern Nevada. This
smoke has remained stationary since last evening.

HAZE/DUST:
Southern/Central U.S:
An expansive area of aerosols remains across much of the gulf coast
states, central Plains, and Mississippi Valley, as far north as
Iowa/Illinois. The composition of these aerosols is a mix between
haze/pollution and Saharan dust.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
