DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z July 11, 2014

SMOKE:
Canada/U.S:
An extensive area of smoke continues to descend southward from wildfires
occurring across Northwest Territories and can be seen over Alberta and
Saskatchewan. Much of the recently emitted smoke is obscured by cloud
cover associated with a low pressure system moving eastward through
Alberta and Saskatchewan. Remnant smoke from these wildfires is seen
over Manitoba, southern Hudson Bay, Ontario, eastern Dakotas, Minnesota,
Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and western Kentucky. Moderate
density smoke can be seen within this larger area over southern Manitoba,
southwestern Ontario, eastern Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri.

Washington:
Light to heavy density smoke is seen over Washington state, moving
eastward over Idaho and Montana. These areas of smoke are originating
from two named wildfires occurring in the central part of the state
(the Rock Hill and Mills Canyon wildfires). The residual smoke from
these wildfires is moving eastward and combining with the broader area
of residual smoke from the wildfires occurring in Northwest Territories.

DUST:
California:
Two plumes of blowing dust are seen in central California moving eastward,
located to the west of Bakersfield near Soda Lake. Another area of blowing
dust can be seen further south in California, currently moving over the
Salton Sea and along the California/Arizona border.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
