DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z July 13, 2014

SMOKE:
Canada/Northern U.S:
Large areas of light to heavy density smoke is visible in satellite
imagery this morning moving SE through central Canada into the northern
US. Areas affected by heavy smoke include the NW Territories, Nunavut,
BC, and Alberta. Areas affected by medium density smoke include the
NW Territories, Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, northern Montana, North
Dakota, northern South Dakota, southern Minnesota, the upper peninsula
of Michigan, and Lake Superior. Areas of light density smoke include
Nunavut, southern Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC, Montana, North
Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, northern Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin,
Michigan, southern Ontario, and the western Great Lakes. This remnant
smoke originates from the wildfires burning in BC, Alberta, and the
NW Territories.

DUST:
Mississippi Valley
A large area of dense blowing dust is visible in satellite imagery this
morning. The Saharan dust is visible in New Mexico, Texas , Oklahoma,
and Arkansas and seems to be extending east. Although due to the spatial
limitations of GOES-W, it is difficult to determine how far the dust
extends east at sunrise.

AEROSOLS:
Northeast:
An area of unknown aerosols are visible moving offshore the Northeast
into the Atlantic Ocean this morning. The plume is first visible at
sunrise and extends from New Jersey to Maine.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
