DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z July 19, 2014

SMOKE:
US/Canada:
Wildfires burning across Washington, Oregon, Northwest Territories and
northern Saskatchewan are producing a tremendous amount of smoke across
central/eastern Canada and most of northern/central US. In Oregon,
heavy smoke is emitting southeast from wildfires in the north central
section of the state moving SSE to near the California/Idaho border.
A wildfire in southeastern Oregon is emitting moderately dense to dense
smoke moving east into southern Idaho, northern Utah and western Wyoming.
In Washington state wildfires in the north central region of the state are
emitting dense to very dense smoke moving east southeast into northern
Idaho and northwest Montana. In Northwest Territories and northern
Saskatchewan wildfires are producing dense to very dense smoke SSE to
southeast across both regions within borders. Residual smoke from all
of these wildfires spreads east to the Atlantic Ocean. Moderately dense
residual smoke is seen across western/southern Ontario southward into
the far northern Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley. Another dense area
of residual smoke is seen through the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley region
spreading east over the Mid Atlantic (far south as PA) and then northward
through the Northeast and along the Canadian coast. Another narrow
area spreads over central Quebec and most of southern Quebec.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
