DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z August 07, 2014

SMOKE:
Canada/US:
Large areas of light to heavy smoke continue to be visible over the
majority of Canada moving into the northern US. The heaviest smoke
is visible affecting Ontario, Quebec, and the Great Lakes. Moderate
smoke is visible in NW Territories, Nunavut, Hudson Bay, Ontario,
Michigan, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. A small detached plume
of moderate smoke is visible over Massachusetts, moving offshore
into the Atlantic. Light density smoke is visible in NW Territories,
Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, the Great Lakes, North Dakota, South
Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey,
New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. This remnant smoke originates
from the fires burning in NW Territories, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

British Columbia:
Two areas of light to moderate density smoke are visible moving eastward
from British Columbia into Alberta and Saskatchewan. This smoke originates
form the wildfires continuing to burn all over British Columbia.

Pacific NW/California:
A large expanse of dominantly moderate smoke is visible extending from
northern California, Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Montana, British Columbia,
Alberta, Saskatchewan, and South Dakota. Once the smoke crosses the border
into Canada, is looks like it converges with the smoke that is emitting
from the wildfires in British Columbia. This remnant smoke originates
from the wildfires burning in California, Oregon, Idaho, Washington,
and Montana.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
