DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z August 16, 2014

Currently:
US/Canada:
Wildfires across the Northwest Territories, British Columbia and
Saskatchewan continue to produce very heavy smoke moving toward the
east to southeast over western/central Canada. Moderately dense smoke
stretches over parts of central British Columbia/Alberta, across southern
Northwest Territories, most of Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba.
Another section of residual smoke can be over parts of southern Ontario,
and across the Great Lakes region. Light smoke extends as far east
as central/northern Quebec and as far south as northern sections of
northwest North Carolina and northeast Tennessee.

Additional wildfires can be seen burning over Labrador with smoke pushing
north into the Labrador Sea.

California:
Wildfires burning in northwest California are producing moderately dense
to dense smoke toward the east-northeast. Residual smoke from wildfires
burning in British Columbia the last few days can be seen off the coast
of Oregon/Northern California and pushing east across all of Oregon,
northern California and into northwest Nevada.

Earlier Today:

North America:
All but the most eastern portions of Canada are blanketed in light to
moderately dense smoke from the numerous wildfires in British Columbia and
the Northwest Territories. This smoke also extends southeast into the
United States where it can be seen over Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan,
Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky before it extends past the viewing
angle of GOES-W. The smoke may continue further to the east, maybe as
far as the Atlantic coast, but sun angle does not allow for detection.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
