DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z August 18, 2014

Canada/Northwestern U.S:
An expansive area of light to moderate density smoke remains across much
of Canada, from British Columbia to western Quebec and from Great Slave
Lake southward to the US border. A broad area of moderate smoke is from
central British Columbia across the central Prairie provinces to western
Hudson Bay. Dense smoke was seen from the fires south of Great Slave
Lake extending to the southeast across northern northern Saskatchewan
into northwest Manitoba with another area of dense smoke over central
and southern Alberta. On the eastern extent, the smoke drops south into
southeast Ontario and into western New York.

The smoke from the Canadian fires has spilled into the Northwest US
where it merged with smoke from the fires in northern California. The
smoke extended from off the Oregon and northern California coasts and
across northern California, most of Oregon and Washington, through
central Idaho and across the northern tier f Montana. Moderate smoke
was seen over northern Montana and northwest California into adjoining
Oregon. An area of dense smoke was near the fire complexes in California.

Midwest:
A patch of remnant light smoke was over eastern Iowa and central
Wisconsin.

Northern Canada:
A streak of light smoke was detected from northwest Nunavut extending
to the northwest over the open Arctic ocean.

DUST:
A broad area of Saharan dust is currently over much of the southern and
central Gulf of Mexico and the western Caribbean, reaching inland over
South Florida to a line over Lake Okeechobee and the Texas coastline.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
