DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z August 23, 2014
SMOKE: Canada: Wildfires across Northwest Territories surrounding Great Slave Lake continue to produce smoke that is currently slowly drifting over NW Territories, Nunavut, northern Alberta and northern Saskatchewan. A detached area of light density remnant smoke associated with these wildfires can be seen further east, moving over eastern Hudson Bay, Quebec, Labrador, and far northeastern Ontario. British Columbia/Northwestern U.S: A widespread area of moderate to heavy density smoke is visible moving southward from wildfires occurring in British Columbia into Washington and northwestern Oregon. The two areas of heaviest density smoke are located in southern British Columbia stretching into northwestern Washington to the southern extent of Puget Sound, as well as a small area closest to the wildfires. Western U.S: Multiple wildfire complexes occurring in northern California are producing a plume of smoke extending eastward through northwestern Nevada, southeastern Oregon, and into southern Idaho. DUST: Saharan dust is seen extending over most of the Gulf of Mexico, making its way inland into the U.S. over much of the Gulf Coast and southern Texas. The dust extends northward over the central Plains, through the Tennessee Valley and Ohio Valley into southern portions of the Great Lakes region. Heeps THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
