DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z September 3, 2014

SMOKE:
Western U.S:
A large area of light to heavy density smoke is visible moving eastward
over northern California, southern Oregon, southwestern Idaho, and
northern Nevada. Embedded areas of moderate density smoke are seen
over southern Oregon, northwestern Nevada, and northern California,
and the heaviest smoke is extending from the fire eastward into southern
Oregon. This smoke originates from the Happy Camp fire complex occurring
in northern California.

Idaho/Montana:
An area of light density remnant smoke is moving eastward across central
Idaho, currently making its way into far western Montana. This smoke
most likely originates from multiple fire complexes across central Idaho.

New Mexico:
An area of heavy density smoke is seen extending from a wildfire occurring
in the Valles Caldera National Preserve. The smoke is moving eastward,
approaching the NM/TX border.

DUST:
Central U.S:
An area of light blowing dust is visible moving northward over northern
Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, eastern Colorado, and Nebraska. The leading
edge of the dust appears to be over the NE/SD border. This area of dust
is most likely Saharan in origin.

Oregon:
A large area of thick blowing dust can be seen moving southeastward
over southeastern Oregon, currently reaching the borders of Idaho and
Nevada. This dust is originating from sand dunes along the eastern side
of Summer Lake. Smaller plumes of blowing dust are also seen extending
from smaller sand dunes to the north of Summer Lake.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
