DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z September 4, 2014

California:
The Happy Camp Fire Complext continues to produce light to moderately
dense smoke which is moving west and then south down the California coast.
There is a thin ribbon of light smoke which is being pulled back east
across northern California.

Central US:
An area of haze can be seen over the central United States, namely, Iowa,
Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas. Models suggest this is mainly composed
of blowing dust/sand and other aerosols.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
