DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z September 6, 2014

SMOKE:
Idaho/Washington/Oregon:
An area of light density smoke is visible over central Idaho, eastern
Washington, and northeastern Oregon. This smoke originates from numerous
agricultural burns occurring near the Idaho/Washington border, as well
as through the Nez Perce Reservation.

Western U.S:
The Happy Camp Fire Complex continues to burn in northern California,
producing heavy density smoke drifting over northwestern California and
southwestern Oregon. Light to moderate density smoke associated with
this fire complex can be seen inland over southern Oregon and northern
California.

British Columbia:
Multiple small areas of light density smoke are moving southward through
central British Columbia, all of which originate from wildfires occurring
slightly to the north of this area.

AEROSOLS:
Ohio Valley/Lower Great Lakes:
An expansive area of unknown aerosols is visible out ahead of the frontal
boundary currently pushing across much of the central U.S. States
affected include Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and
western New York.

DUST:
Southern California:
Blowing dust is visible moving northward from Baja California and
northwestern Sonora into southern California, currently reaching just
north of San Bernardino.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
