DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z September 9, 2014

SMOKE:
Northwestern US:
A large area of light to moderate smoke is visible moving eastward from
numerous wildfires burning in the Pacific Northwest (including wildfires
in California, Oregon, and Idaho, but mainly the Happy Camp and July
complexes in northern California). The majority of the smoke, originating
in northern California, stretches east across central Oregon, central
Idaho, and Montana before it curves into South and North Dakota. The
smoke also extends west out over the Pacific ocean. Moderately dense
smoke remains confined to the vicinity of northern California and
southern Oregon.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
