DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z September 25, 2014

SMOKE
California to Montana:
Smoke from the King wildfire in California east of Sacramento along with
smoke from numerous other fires in northern Idaho and northwest Montana
has spread across much of the region from northern California, across
eastern Oregon, far southeast Washington, northern Idaho and northwest
Montana. Areas of moderate to thick smoke were mostly confined to areas
near the King wildfire west of the Nevada border and also from northeast
Idaho into northwest Montana.

Lower Mississippi Valley:
A tremendous number of fires due to seasonal agricultural burning were
seen from the Bootheel of southeast Missouri southward across eastern
Arkansas, northeast Louisiana and western Mississippi. Collectively they
have generated several areas of smoke that have congealed into a broader
area of light to moderate smoke that was mostly moving to the west and
northwest into central Arkansas and southeast Missouri.

DUST
Nevada:
An area of light blowing dust was observed moving to the north northeast
off of the dry lake beds and loose soils of northwest Nevada from late
afternoon until sunset.

OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
