DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z October 1, 2014

Middle and Lower Mississippi Valley:
Seasonal burning continued over southeastern Missouri, eastern Arkansas,
and northwestern Mississippi with numerous fires detected in this region
resulting in many relatively small smoke plumes which moved generally off
to the north and northwest during the afternoon and early evening. Some
of these plumes congealed into a somewhat larger area of smoke which
was visible primarily over southeastern Missouri. Cloudiness farther to
the south especially over eastern Arkansas and northwestern Mississippi
interfered with smoke detection.

California:
A number of small fires (likely agricultural) over the northern portion
of the Sacramento Valley were responsible for small smoke plumes which
moved rapidly to the south and southeast during the afternoon reaching
the central portions of the valley just prior to sunset.

Alaska:
Visible imagery appears to show streaks of what may be glacial flour
moving to the southeast and over the Gulf of Alaska from point sources
along the coast of southeastern Alaska.

A small area of residual smoke from numerous ag burns was located over
north central Arkansas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
