DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z April 5, 2015

SMOKE
Oklahoma/Kansas:
Multiple agricultural and prescribed burns were detected in satellite
imagery this afternoon/evening throughout eastern Oklahoma and eastern
Kansas. Light density smoke plumes associated with fires in southeastern
Oklahoma were moving to the west-northwest and light to moderate density
smoke plumes in northeastern Oklahoma and eastern Kansas were moving to
the north-northeast.

DUST
Kansas/Nebraska:
A large area of blowing dust was seen in western Kansas moving northeast
into Nebraska. Upper level clouds moving in from the southwest prevented
the pinpointing of where the dust originated.

SMOKE
Central US:
A large area of light density remnant smoke was visible this morning in
GOES-W imagery moving eastward. States affected by the smoke include South
Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, northern Texas, northern Louisiana,
Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, southern
Michigan, Indiana, and western Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Due
to the spatial limitations of GOES-W, it is difficult to discern how
far east the smoke extends. This smoke originates from the numerous
agricultural burns that have been prescribed in the Central Plains and
Midwest this week.

DUST
East Pacific/California:
Elevated dust that originated from Asia continues to be visible as it
moves onshore along the coast of central California.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
