DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1845Z May 28, 2015

Alaska/Western Canada:
Several areas of thin to moderately dense smoke are seen over portions
of eastern Alaska, northwest and western Canada in this morning's GOES
imagery. An upper low moving southward along the western Canada coast is
helping to draw the smoke south offshore and wrapping some remnant smoke
inland across British Columbia. Much of this smoke is coming wildfires
burning in far eastern Alaska, the Yukon Territory, and the Northwest
Territories.

South Central/Southeast Canada:
Two large areas of thin remnant smoke can be seen stretching northeastward
from southern Alberta to Manitoba and from northern Ontario east and
southeastward across part of Quebec. This smoke is believed to largely
be from fires in northwest Canada and Alaska.

Great Lakes:
An area of thin remnant smoke covers much of the central and western
Great Lakes this morning. This smoke is believed to be from fires in
northwest Canada/Alaska, though agricultural burning in south central
Canada may have also contributed some smoke.

South Central British Columbia/Washington:
An area of unknown aerosol can be seen in visible imagery moving
southeastward across far southern British Columbia and central Washington
state. There is a possibility that this could be smoke from fires in
Alaska/northwest Canada but may also be unrelated.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
