DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z May 29, 2015

SMOKE
Alaska/Western Canada:
Several areas of thin smoke were detected in this evening satellite
imagery. One area covered portions of the northern Gulf of Alaska and
northward into much of southern Alaska to the Alaska Range. Aerosol
models suggest that this is smoke from burning in Asia. A broad area of
light smoke was seen over much of northeast Alaska and spreading into
northern and central Yukon and Northwest Territories as far east as Great
Slave and Great Bear Lakes. This smoke was related to numerous wildfires
burning in this area and there were several patches of moderate to dense
smoke embedded within this larger area.

South Central/Southeast Canada:
Two large areas of thin remnant smoke can be seen over parts of central
and southern Canada which are both mostly remnant smoke from the fires
in northwest Canada. One area extended from northeast British Columbia
southeastward into southeast Alberta and southern Saskatchewan, just
spilling into northern Montana by sunset. Another area was over southeast
Canada from southern Quebec into Labrador and into the Labrador Sea.

Great Lakes:
An area of thin remnant smoke covers much of the Great Lakes and
surrounding states this evening. This smoke is believed to be from fires
in northwest Canada/Alaska, though agricultural burning in south central
Canada may have also contributed some smoke.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
