DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z June 7, 2015

Central/Eastern Canada/ Northern Plains/New England:
A broad area of light density residual smoke was observed throughout
Central Canada, the Northern Plains, Eastern Canada and New England.
Widespread clouds partially obscured the extent of this broad area of
smoke but a general outline of smoke could be seen in the Northwest
Territories, Alberta, Saskatchewan, northern Montana, western North
Dakota, western/northern portions of Manitoba, southern portions of Hudson
Bay, northern Ontario, western Quebec, and into the western portions of
New England. Just west of this area of smoke was several wildfires that
were producing moderate density smoke plumes traveling east in northern
British Columbia, southeast Yukon, and southwestern Northwest Territories.
Within the broad area of residual smoke, substantial wildfires were
producing heavy density smoke plumes in northern Alberta.

Southern Plains/Northern Gulf of Mexico:
An area of light density remnant smoke was seen over the Southern Plains,
and the northern portions of the Gulf of Mexico approximately from the
eastern Texas coastline to Mississippi delta. This smoke originated from
fires in the Southern Plains as well as remnant smoke that crossed the
Gulf of Mexico from agricultural fires in Central America. This area of
smoke is relatively stationary and rotating clockwise over the Southern
Plains.

Bay of Campeche:
Remnant light density smoke was seen in the southwestern Gulf of
Mexico. This area of smoke was moving southward and originated from oil
exploration in the Bay of Campeche and agricultural/prescribed burns in
Central America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
