DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z June 8, 2015

Central Canada:
A broad area of light to moderate density smoke was visible in central
Canada this afternoon/evening in GOES-13/GOES-15 imagery. This area
of smoke was seen moving to the southeast and covered the Northwest
Territories, northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, western portions of Manitoba
and eastern North Dakota. The full extent of this area of smoke can not
be determined due to clouds obscuring British Columbia and convection
creating cloud cover over eastern Manitoba. Several wildfires that
contributed to this area of smoke were observed in the Northwest
Territories, northern Alberta, and the northern/central portions of
Saskatchewan. Heavy density smoke plumes as well as pyrocumulus clouds
could be seen emerging from wildfires near Lac La Ronge Provincial Park
in north-central Saskatchewan. Several more heavy density smoke plumes
could also be seen moving southeast in northwestern Saskatchewan and
northern Alberta.

Southern Plains/US Southeast:
Residual light density smoke continues to be observed over the
Southern Plains and the US Southeast. This area of smoke was likely
from agricultural/prescribed burns in the Southern Plains, and seasonal
burns in Central America that produced smoke which traversed the Gulf
of Mexico. The movement of this smoke appears to be relatively stationary
but gradually advecting eastward.

Gulf of Mexico:
An area of light density remnant smoke was seen in the southwest portions
of the Gulf of Mexico. This remnant smoke originated from oil rigs in
the Bay of Campeche and seasonal burning in Central America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
