DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z June 13, 2015

Southwest Canada/Montana/Idaho:
An area of light to moderate smoke was seen crossing from extreme
southeast British Columbia into southern Alberta and southwest
Saskatchewan and spilling over into adjoining Montana and Idaho. This
smoke is from wildfires furthern north in Canada that has gotten pulled
southward around a large area of low pressure spanning much of central
Canada. Extensive clouds associated with this storm system prohibit
further smoke detection in much of Canada west of Hudson Bay.

California/Oregon:
A pair of fires in northwest California and extreme southwest Oregon were
generating area of mostly light smoke overnight and this morning. Smoke
from the fire in Oregon along the Curry/Josephine county border just north
of the California state line was moving to the southwest and offshore
where it then turned south moving as far south as the San Francisco
Bay area. The fire in California is along the northern Humboldt/Trinity
county border. Smoke had settled into the valley into the morning.

Midwest:
An area of light remnant smoke from the extensive agricultural burning
in the lower Mississippi Valley was detected lifting to the north over
much of Illinois and Indiana and extending into western Ohio.

South Central and Southeast Canada:
A patch of light smoke was seen lifting to the northeast around Lake
Winnipeg. A broad area of light remnant smoke from the wildfires in
northwest Canada was seen stretching across most of Ontario into southern
Quebec and northern New England.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
