DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0400Z June 16, 2015

SMOKE:
Southeast:
An area of light-density remnant smoke was visible off the Atlantic
coast from the Delmarva peninsula south to Georgia/Florida border.
This area of smoke originates from the remnant smoke from Canada along
with more local agricultural/prescribed burns that have been burning in
the Southeast (notably in North and South Carolinas.)

Western & Central Canada/Northern Plains:
A large area of light-density smoke is visible extending from Alberta to
Manitoba moving SE at sunset. This large area is visible moving across the
border into the US, affecting Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota. This
smoke originates from the wildfires burning in Yukon, British Columbia,
Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

West Coast:
An area of light-density remnant smoke is tracking to the northeast from
northeastern California over portions of southwestern Oregon. Smoke is
believed to have originated from two wildfires in the area; the Saddle
fire in northeastern California and the Buckskin fire in southwest Oregon.

Alaska:
Plume of remnant light to moderately dense smoke extends just north of
Anchorage to the west-southwest over northern portions of Kodiak Island
and towards the Bering Sea. Smoke can be traced back to the Sockeye
wildfire located in Willow, AK, as well as the Can Creek fire and cluster
of fires near Kenai, AK. Several other fires to the east near the Yukon
border may be contributing to the general haze in the area as well.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
