DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z June 26, 2015
SMOKE Alaska/Northwest to South Central Canada/North Central US: The ongoing outbreak of significant wildfires continues across southwestern to east central Alaska and from northwestern to Central Canada resulting in an very expansive area of moderate to dense smoke which covers a good portion of Alaska, and Canada from the Yukon to Saskatchewan province in south central Canada. Thinner density smoke from these fires extended southward into far south central Canada and the northern US around North Dakota and Minnesota. Southwestern US: Large fires in far northwestern Baja, San Bernardino County in southern California, and south of Lake Tahoe in east central California were all emitting large quantities of smoke with the thickest smoke seen moving to the north from the Baja fire and from the San Bernardino County fire across a good portion of southern California and over the CA-NV border to the west of Las Vegas. Another swath of thicker smoke was observed moving to the northwest from the fire near Lake Tahoe across north central California. Thinner density smoke from these fires and several others in Arizona covered a much larger region including nearly all of Nevada, Utah, and large portions of Arizona and Colorado. JS Earlier this Morning... DUST Southeastern U.S: An expansive area of Saharan dust remains over much of the southeastern U.S, extending inland as far as eastern Texas/Oklahoma/eastern Kansas/Missouri, and its northern extent seen along majority of the east cost states as far as southwestern Pennsylvania. Due to the visual limitations of GOES-W, it is difficult to determine how far east the dust is traveling. -Kemal/Oegerle THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
