DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0330Z August 25 2015

SMOKE
Western/Central US and Western/Central Canada:
Large concentrations of light to heavy smoke remain to be observed
over a majority of the United States. The heaviest smoke is visible
in California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. Medium
smoke is visible in California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Idaho,
British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana,
North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, as it continues
east. Light smoke is visible in Colorado, New Mexico, Nebraska, Kansas,
Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas, moving eastward. This smoke originates
from the wildfires burning in California, Oregon, Washington, British
Columbia, Idaho, and Montana.

Gulf Coast:
An area of light density remnant smoke is visible moving east
through the southern Gulf Coast states from the west coast this
afternoon/evening. Areas affected include Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi,
Alabama, and Florida.

Eastern Canada:
The large plume visible this morning that dominated eastern Canada
remains, however has shifted NW. Areas affected by light to medium remnant
smoke include Hudson Bay, Nunavut, Quebec, NewFoundland and Labrador,
Anticosti Island, and St. Pierre and Miquelon.

OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
