DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z September 8, 2015

SMOKE:
Pacific Ocean/California/Nevada/Colorado:
A large plume of light to medium-density smoke is visible originating from
the Rough wildfire complex near County. California. The heaviest smoke
is visible surrounding the source, as well as lighter smoke moving north
as well as east into Nevada and entering Utah. Another detached plume
from this source is visible in Colorado as it moves into Nebraska. Light
smoke is also visible in northern California near the Oregon border,
where wildfires are burning and emptying into the Pacific Ocean.

Mid-Atlantic/New England/Atlantic Ocean:
A large area of light to medium-density remnant smoke is visible extending
NE from Pennsylvania to Nova Scotia this morning. Other areas affecting
include New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts,
Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. This smoke originates from the
wildfires that continue to burn on the US west coast, but as well as
a single wildfire located near Woodland, New Jersey, that is spilling
smoke out into the Atlantic Ocean.

AEROSOLS:
Mississippi River Valley:
Areas of stationary unknown aerosols are visible in eastern Texas,
Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, and Illinois this morning at sunrise. Due
to the agricultural burning that has been going on there and the heavy
remnant smoke that has been coming over from the west coast, there is
a chance that there is smoke mixed in as well.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
