DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z September 18, 2015

SMOKE:
Lower Mississippi River Valley:
Multiple agricultural and prescribed burns were observed over the lower
Mississippi River Valley this evening in satellite imagery. Many light
density smoke emissions associated with these burns were moving to
the northeast.

From Earlier Today...
SMOKE:
Central US/Canada:
A large area of light-density smoke is visible moving NE extending from
Quebec to Arkansas this morning. Areas affected include Quebec, Ontario,
Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma, and
Arkansas. Another plume nearby is visible extending from Minnesota
to Kansas, Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, and

that have been taking place in the Mississippi River Valley this week,
and may be also a mix of remnant smoke from the wildfires that have been
burning in California.

Eastern Canada/New England/Atlantic Ocean:
An area of light-density remnant smoke is visible moving SE extending
from Quebec to to New Hampshire into the Atlantic Ocean. Areas affected
include Quebec, Anticosti Island, St. Pierre and Miquelon, New Brunswick,
Nova Scotia, Maine, and New Hampshire. This smoke most likely originates
from the the agricultural burns that have been taking place in the
Mississippi River Valley this week, and may be also a mix of remnant
smoke from the wildfires that have been burning in California.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
