DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z November 17, 2015

DUST:
New Mexico/Texas:
An area of relatively thick density blowing dust is seen moving eastward
across southeastern portions of New Mexico into far western Texas. This
is due to the strong surface winds behind the passing frontal boundary.

California/Arizona/Nevada:
Another area of lighter density blowing dust is seen in southern
California, drifting south/southeast into southwestern Arizona. This
blowing dust appears to originate from near the Mojave National Preserve,
also due to stronger surface winds. Light dust was also seen in the
southern central valley moving to the south from central Merced to
western Kern counties. Additional blowing dust was seen moving south
from several point sources of loose and sandy soils of southern Nevada,
mostly emanating from Esmeralda, Nye and Lincoln counties.

OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
